SFTPPlus MFT vs TIBCO Managed File Transfer

Comparison criteria ​

TIBCO costs are an illustrative budget based on historical reseller prices, with allowances for maintenance and custom integrations. They are not current TIBCO list prices or a quote.

This is a documentation comparison of on-premises deployments, using TIBCO MFT 8.7.1 documentation. The TIBCO column covers Internet Server, Command Center, and Platform Server where named. It does not assume that every feature is included in a basic Internet Server licence.

The combined SFTPPlus MFT server and client licences cost $3,800, with $950 for annual standard support, giving $4,750 in the first year and $950 in following years. The licence includes Oracle Database transfers, IBM MQ, and sending and receiving AS2. Cluster controller licensing and additional active nodes cost extra.

We did not find a current public TIBCO quote for this deployment. As a historical reference, the ESCgov reseller schedule hosted in its February 2020 archive lists Internet Server at $22,851.39, production Command Center at $45,702.77, and Windows or UNIX Platform Server at $7,617.13 per licensed processor unit. Those historical units must not be assumed to match today's core, virtual machine, subscription, or bundle terms.

For one licensed unit of each component, the historical licence subtotal rounds to $76,200. We assume annual maintenance at 20% ($15,240), plus a $10,000 initial custom integration allowance and $5,000 annual integration upkeep from the second year. This gives an illustrative first-year total of $101,440 and $20,240 in following years, rounded in the comparison table. These maintenance and integration allowances are planning assumptions, not TIBCO rates. The integration allowance covers custom Oracle file mapping and any required WebDAV or Exchange attachment integration, without assuming a separate BusinessWorks licence. The estimate excludes infrastructure, taxes, extra licensed units, HA nodes, and any additional non-production or disaster recovery licences.

Why choose SFTPPlus MFT ​

SFTPPlus MFT is a better fit when the job is to receive partner files, automate delivery, and connect them to Oracle or IBM MQ with a small number of components to operate. Its single INI configuration file can be reviewed in version control and deployed alongside application settings. The file transfer service does not require a separate Java installation, application server, or configuration database.

For Oracle, administrators configure SQL queries that map rows to files and columns to file content and metadata. A transfer can read a row and send its content over SFTP, or receive a file and insert it into an existing table. Scheduling, retries, filtering, and audit records use the same transfer engine as other locations. There are no required PL/SQL stored procedures or extraction scripts in the SFTPPlus Oracle integration.

TIBCO's ability to store its own configuration in Oracle does not provide that row-to-file mapping. The SFTPPlus advantage is having the mapping directly in the MFT configuration.

AS2, IBM MQ, WebDAV, and Oracle transfers are covered by the combined licence. Published prices and included development, testing, and cold recovery use make budgeting easier.

SFTPPlus MFT is actively maintained and developed, with a focus on a self-contained MFT product that customers can operate on their own infrastructure. New functionality is driven by customer file transfer requirements, alongside security fixes and compatibility updates. The SFTPPlus roadmap describes how these requests are developed and validated, with regular minor releases planned at intervals of four to six weeks.

TIBCO's broader development strategy emphasizes cloud and hybrid integration middleware through the TIBCO Platform. Its BusinessWorks cloud modernization initiative illustrates that direction. For teams whose priority is continued development of a standalone, on-premises file transfer service, SFTPPlus MFT offers a more focused product roadmap. TIBCO continues to support on-premises deployments within its broader platform strategy.

When TIBCO MFT is a better fit ​

TIBCO is a better fit for organizations already operating its Platform Server agents on IBM i, z/OS, or UNIX systems that current SFTPPlus releases do not support. Command Center provides central control and reporting for that estate, while Internet Server connects external partners to internal endpoints. Existing TIBCO licences, integrations, and operational experience can make expanding that deployment more practical than replacing it.

TIBCO also has capabilities SFTPPlus does not currently provide: OFTP2, SAML, native Amazon S3 and Google Cloud Storage connectors, HDFS, and BigQuery. Its JMS interface works with TIBCO EMS and ActiveMQ as well as IBM MQ. SFTPPlus's MQ connector is limited to point-to-point IBM MQ queues, with each file fitting into one message, and its S3 and Google Cloud Storage connectors remain on the roadmap.

For transfers involving people, TIBCO's Mailbox, FileShare, and Four Eyes features offer sharing and approval steps that SFTPPlus would need an external application to supply. Command Center's built-in report interface can also suit teams that want reports within their MFT administration tool. Both products support streaming and high availability, so those features alone are not a reason to replace TIBCO.

TIBCO's 8.7.1 overview and quick start guide describe the components, supported endpoints, and integration requirements used in this comparison. The user guide covers administration, sharing, and Four Eyes approvals. The 8.5.1 release notes document the removal of RADIUS in 8.5.0.

TIBCO MFT remains an active, supported product, listed in the TIBCO Platform licence bill of materials. Our assessment that recent development is largely incremental is based on the 8.7.1 feature list, which includes security, compatibility, cloud connector, and workflow improvements.
